NBN (National Broadband Network) confusion

There seems to be a lot of confusion out there about the NBN. Recently at a party I had an interesting conversation which led me to the realisation that most Aussies just don’t get it - why the NBN is so important to us as a nation. While I can’t necessarily solve all of the confusion I can certainly give you some things to think about in the lead up to the federal election.

Whether we have a Coalition or Labor federal government, the NBN is as important to Australia as was the telegraph and as are the telephone lines, federal highways, and power and water infrastructure. In short the NBN ensures Australia’s digital future. It is the next piece of infrastructure that is absolutely necessary to Australia. Yes, most of us have pretty good Internet access at work and at home now. But the NBN will enable so much more for the average Australian. More than you and I can imagine right now! Because many of the benefits we will reap from the NBN haven’t even been invented yet! And they never will be unless the NBN exists. The investment we make today probably won’t be realised by our generation but by our children’s generation. We owe it to them to get this right.

As we draw closer to the federal election I plead with you to make sure you understand why the NBN is important to Australia. How a new digital superhighway will ensure Australians continue to prosper for generations to come. The mining boom will not be around forever (in fact it may already be slowing down) …
I also plead with you to make sure that whoever you vote for has real plans for the NBN. Plans that allow Australians to realise its long-term benefits.

Before election day, make sure you ask your local candidate how their political party plans to ensure the NBN is delivered and that the investment already made isn’t wasted. Let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I personally don’t particularly care how I connect to the NBN backbone (I would of course prefer fibre to my home as part of the rollout); but I do care that we have a backbone that connects all of Australia together. And that backbone must be fibre. Copper, wireless or satellite simply won’t cut it for our future. We must plan for digital growth.

And this is not a broadband network (but it is what we have now).

It’s a simple analogy really - why build a 3 lane motorway to Sydney’s west when we actually need 4 lanes right now and we know we will need 8 lanes in the future?
